It's gratifying to see the early response to our Oct. 16 2011 conference with Tom Seeley et al ... particularly since over one third of those buying tickets are from states outside North Carolina! That's what the Center is all about - serving the entire surrounding region - and bringing exceptional speakers like Gro Amdam, David Tarpy and Christofer Bang. By the way, we'll be announcing the winners of our first annual "Black Jar Honey Contest" at the Event.

Who is John Kefuss, and why is Lady's visit to his apiary special?

Because for a natural beekeeper it's something akin to being granted an audience with the Pope - except he doesn't wear a funny hat. Quite possibly John Kefuss has been keeping Apis meliferra melifera without chemical treatments longer than anyone else on the planet. He is the original voice in the wilderness, an American with a French wife, living in southern France since before Nixon resigned. Friends with the irrascible, iconoclastic, and not so distantly deceased Steve Tabor, Kefuss breeds queen bees for the going rate of 650 Euros a piece (What 's that these days? Anybody up on the current exchange rate? It's still a LOT!) He has a partner in Chile - and with the reversal of seasons between  sides of the equator he's able to supply Europe with survivor stock queens year round. No delays of drone emergence after Winter. (Why can't we do that?)

Kefuss eschews being the scientist - wrapping himself in the guise of a practical beekeeper...
